THE PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE AND AMBASSADOR PARTICIPATED IN A HIGH-LEVEL SEMINAR ENTITLED “WOMEN IN DIPLOMACY: A GENEVA PERSPECTIVE”
On 8 May 2025, H.E. Mrs. Davaasuren Gerelmaa, Ambassador and Permanent Representative, participated in the high-level seminar entitled “Women in Diplomacy: A Geneva Perspective,” co-organized by the Permanent Mission of the Swiss Confederation, the International Gender Champions, and the London School of Economics and Political Science.
In her remarks, Ambassador and Permanent Representative Gerelmaa presented Mongolia’s national policies and initiatives aimed at promoting gender equality within the diplomatic service. She also underscored Mongolia’s broader efforts to safeguard the rights of women and girls, to ensure equitable participation in social, political, and international decision-making processes, to increase the proportion of women in leadership roles, and to foster female leadership at all levels.
Since 2022, the London School of Economics and Political Science has been leading the “Women in Diplomacy” (WiD) project, which seeks to identify barriers and enablers to women’s advancement in diplomacy and foreign policy. In June 2024, the WiD team released its inaugural report, entitled “Strengthening the Representation of Women in Diplomacy: Challenges and Policy Solutions.”
During the seminar, the project team presented key findings from the report and facilitated an engaging discussion on advancing gender equality in international relations and strengthening women’s participation and leadership in diplomacy and foreign policy-making.
According to research conducted by the University of Gothenburg, women accounted for only 20.54% of ambassadors worldwide as of 2023, and over the ten-year period from 2013 to 2023, the proportion of female ambassadors increased by just five percentage points.
