PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE DELIVERED STATEMENT DURING THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL OPEN DEBATE ON WOMEN, PEACE AND SECURITY
On October 24th, 2024, the UN Security Council held its annual open debate on women, peace and security, which this year is titled “Women Building Peace in a Changing Environment”.
The open debate chaired by the President of the Swiss Confederation Viola Amherd was opened and briefed by UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, UN Women Executive Director Sima Sami Bahous and civil society representatives.
H.E. Ms. Gerelmaa Davaasuren, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva attended and delivered her statement during the open debate.
In her statement, the Permanent Representative noted the role and importance of the implementation of the landmark UN Security Council Resolution 1325 as crucial than ever in tackling some of the most pressing security issues of our time, and informed the Security Council on Mongolia’s efforts in promoting equal participation of women domestically and how Mongolia aims to demonstrate leadership in the region.
For instance, in her statement Permanent Representative noted Mongolia's efforts to enhance opportunities for women to be elected to Parliament resulted in 32 women winning seats in the recent elections, and the hosting of the Meeting of Female Foreign Ministers in Ulaanbaatar in 2023 and the World Women’s Forum in 2024, as well as Mongolia’s pledge to systematically increase female UN peacekeepers’ deployment.
